Po Pea’s Birthday

It was Po Pea’s (grandma’s) birthday celebration this weekend, and all her children and grandchildren were ready to celebrate her. These birthdays are never on the actual birthday day, so we can always expect to have a good time any time of the year.

We pitched in together and got an Airbnb. It was AWESOME! The house had so many stairs and a pool. It was also in the middle of nowhere, so we had to pack all the possibilities. The husband is always in charge of his snacks and meds. Sometimes, I ask if he got everything, and almost every time he has, aside from snacks and juice, if his sugar drops. He never thinks about the lows. I am unsure if that’s a man thing or if I am his crutch.

Blakely, my daughter is also in charge of her snacks and meds. She is 10 years old and was diagnosed with diabetes October 2022. I give her a checklist; she is fantastic at taking care of it and herself.

Blakely’s list includes the following:

Dark choc is her favorite at 14 carbsH‑E‑B Organics Apple Grape Juice 6.75 oz Boxes29 carbs
Bars for lowsSimple Mills Almond Flour Snack BarsDark choc is her fav at 14 carbs
Fruit for lowsBlueberries and Apples with HEB CHOCOLATE HUMUShumus alone 21 carbs

Extra Omnipod & coversAdhesive Patches for Omnipod,Waterproof-36 PackGreat with water play.
Alcohol wipes & Skin TacSkin-Tac™ Adhesive Barrier Wipes 50 count This is the bomb for making sure sensors stick!
Prewrap Colorful Self Adhesive Bandage WrapThis is if she will be in the water all day!

My list:

Make sure the Fam has everything they need

Sugar tabs

Finger prick glucose monitor

Once all packed, we are set to have a great time on any overnight trip in the middle of nowhere.

Our kids had a blast, and so did we. Blakely had a low in the middle of the night, which the Dexcom alerted me to, and we were able to take care of it easy peazy.

I love trips and used to dread them once Blakely was diagnosed. I would freak out about what to pack, and now I feel like we have finally gotten to a good place with what we should bring and what we can leave behind. Po Pea loves her children, but her grandkids are at the top of the list. I’m glad we were able to celebrate her and come together.
